Smooth texture on the upper area and sides
contrasts with the crackled appearance of the center and lower areas to give
the impression that the dancers are emerging out of a rock wall. The figures and
lower areas are built up higher enhancing that impression of emergence. The
colors are soft with strong highlighting. Iridescence creates a sheen in the
highlights. A fun image! |

Very thick modeling paste creates many layers of
depth. There are various textures from smooth to rough, from subtle to obvious.
The small wooden house gives the scale of the cave its truly huge context. The
house may be in a beautiful area, full of bright light and wonderful rocks but
it is also enclosed by the cave which does not provide many options or
possibilities. There are many faces with various expression in the “cave walls”

the cave walls with lots of texture including various brush strokes and adding
sand to the paint and other mediums. This really makes it feel as though you
are standing inside the cave and viewing the distant grassy hills and trees.

At the edge of sea and sand, new possibilities
arise. Rich, deep color shades the sea while the brush strokes present the free
movement of the water. Sandy mediums were used to create the beach with real
sand sprinkled over it to create the color and individual grains. Rocks from my
yard complete the beach. The perspective is as though you are standing at the
edge of the sea looking down where the edges meet. Colors include¨ Shades of

Crackle paste dries into an interesting broken
(cracked) background with unusual, absorbent texture similar to watercolor
paper. The landscape was painted on this background with acrylic paint. A shadow
box with glass was used to frame the painting to maintain the integrity of the
materials. The shadow box frame provides a 0.75” (2 cm) wide, plain black edge
around the painting. Frame is not shown due to reflection from the glass when
photographing; the black edge shown was applied in Photoshop to approximate the
frame. Colors include: Blue, turquoise, white, green, yellow-green,

A thin application of modeling paste creates the
textured rocks. The highlights in the “sunny” areas are created with
interference gold color which also appears as silvery white when the angle of
viewing is changed (unfortunately, photos don’t show this effect). This
highlighting is from the brightest areas to the left on the hills and left
foreground grassy area. The colors are warm and expansive – just the country a
cougar would like! Colors include: Brown,
tans, red-brown, red-orange, yellow, yellow-orange, white, green-brown,
gold/silver interference color and silver. |

Description
|
The paint was thickened with textural mediums so
that the stone faces and trees emerge out from the canvas by up to 5/8” (4.1
cm). This gives an unusual 3D effect. The more vertical faces of the rock
formations have a rough texture while the more horizontal sandstone forms are
smooth. The dark cave is recessed into the “stone” face and partially obscured
by tree branches. The raised bark of the vegetation as well as the leaves
create additional texture and interest. When the painting was finished, I discovered 3
faces in the rocks that were not planned. Can you find the Guardians' faces?

Thick paint on the canyon walls gives the
impression of rough texture while the sand floor is smooth. The unusual light
allows a small juniper tree to struggle into life. The perception of the
painting changes as the light in the room alters, giving the perception that
the glow seems to move, intensify, or weaken. The frame, which recesses the
painting, enhances the sense of a unique glowing depth in the canyon. Depth is
also increased with the indication of another passage shown in very dark color.

Description

Sandstone canyon background with tree and
bushes. The canyon façade is very thick and the receding depths are actually
carved into the texture as well as painted. The tree and bushes stand out from
the background. Colors and depths appear to change depending on the amount of
light and direction it comes from. There are also a few ‘ghosts’ and a dragon’s
face in the sandstone background which led to the title. Colors include: Reds, oranges, yellows, browns, greens |
